Every day, Luoto is open on the water at its slip: seventy-five minute sessions from 5am, up to twelve guests, with the harbor one step from the sauna door.
Heat
Sit in the wood-lined sauna. Water on the hot stones lifts the löyly, the soft wave of steam.
Cold
Step down the ladder into the harbor, or cool slowly in the open air.
Rest
Sit on deck, wrapped up, with the water and the city around you.
Repeat
Two or three rounds. Talk, or say nothing at all.
“Luoto” is the Finnish word for a small rocky islet.A place apart, in the middle of the water
For centuries the sauna has been where people in the north gather to warm up, clear their heads and spend time together. It was never a luxury. It was a weekly habit, shared by neighbors.
In the past decade that habit has moved onto the water. Oslo's harbor went from no public saunas to dozens, rafts and boats moored along the fjord and full through the darkest months. London, Copenhagen and Stockholm followed.
Luoto brings that tradition to Boston: a small wood-clad sauna on the harbor, open to anyone, priced for regulars, and built to be used through every season.
Finland counts about 3.3 million saunas for 5.5 million people. Its sauna culture was added to UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage in 2020.
A sauna that leaves the dock
Luoto is a boat as well as a sauna. All year round it casts off for ninety-minute voyages across Boston Harbor with a licensed captain: heat in the cabin, the skyline and the islands outside, and a stop to swim in the harbor.
Day voyage
Sauna rounds out on open water, with the harbor islands close by and the city behind you.
Spring through fall
Sunset voyage
Steam, cold air and the skyline turning gold. The signature seat on the boat.
Nightly in summer, weekends in spring and fall, winter weekend afternoons
Private charter
The whole boat for up to twelve: birthdays, teams, a winter snow voyage or the Fourth of July on the water.
Any season, by request
Seats on shared voyages are booked one by one, up to twelve guests. Members receive early booking and a reduced fare.
Two seasons on the water
Winter at the dock
The sauna is at its best when the air is coldest. Short days, steam on the water, a plunge into the harbor and the warmth after. On weekends the boat still leaves the dock for afternoon voyages into the winter light.
Summer on the harbor
Sauna voyages most evenings at sunset, a swim in the harbor, and long evenings on the roof deck, where cold plunge tubs are planned for the warmest months. Day voyages run at midday.
